Small-cap ETFs gain attention as Russell 2000 hits a record high

The Russell 2000 is up 21.8% year to date, and three small-cap ETFs highlighted by ETF Trends vary by fee levels and strategy, from biotech trials to free cash flow screens and value factors.

The Russell 2000 closed at a record high Friday, underscoring renewed interest in small-cap equities, according to ETF Trends.

The outlet points to performance across multiple time frames, citing a 21.83% year-to-date return for the index and 15.46% over the last six months, even after the Russell 2000 dipped on Monday.

ETF Trends highlighted three small-cap ETFs, each using a different factor lens. ALPS Medical Breakthroughs ETF (SBIO) charges 50 basis points to track the S-Network Medical Breakthroughs Index, which focuses on biotech names with one or more drugs in Phase II or III FDA trials, and it has returned 30.65% year to date.

VictoryShares Small Cap Free Cash Flow ETF (SFLO) charges 49 bps and tracks an index of 200 small caps screened for strong free cash flows and high growth metrics, with results of 34.7% year to date. ETF Trends also cited iShares U.S. Small Cap Value Factor ETF (SVAL), which charges 20 bps, targets 250 small caps meeting value standards, and has returned 29.2% year to date.
