Social Security COLA forecasts point to a larger 2027 pay increase

Projections for the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment range around 3.2% to 3.3%, with the 2026 COLA reported at 2.8%.

Social Security beneficiaries may see a larger payout bump tied to the program’s annual cost-of-living adjustment, with early forecasts for the 2027 COLA coming in higher than the 2.8% increase seniors received in 2026, according to Yahoo Finance. The article notes the 2027 COLA announcement is expected in October.

Yahoo Finance links the larger projected adjustment to elevated inflation conditions, citing an inflation rate of 3.4% as of July 2026. It also points to rising oil prices and higher U.S. fuel costs, saying the national average gas price is $4.04 per AAA and that higher energy prices are feeding through to broader economic costs.

The Senior Citizens League, a nonpartisan senior advocacy group, is currently pegging the 2027 adjustment at 3.3%. A separate forecast cited by Yahoo Finance comes from independent Social Security and Medicare policy analyst Mary Johnson, who predicts the 2027 COLA could reach 3.2%.
