Sports insurance premiums rise as fitness and leagues expand risk

Professional sports insurance premium volume has more than doubled since 2020, reaching $2.05 billion in 2026 and projected to hit $3.55 billion by 2034.

Fitness and leisure participation is expanding rapidly in the United States, and the growth is reshaping the insurance market built around sports and events. Insurance Business reports that in 2025, 81 million Americans held a gym or fitness-facility membership, up 5.2% year over year, and more than 100 million used a facility either as a member or non-member.

As sports and leisure organizations add new experiences and operate in more complex environments, insurers and brokers are facing more specialized risk profiles, according to Insurance Business. The outlet says the professional sports insurance market’s premium volume has more than doubled since 2020, climbing to $2.05 billion in 2026 and reaching $3.55 billion by 2034.

Insurance Business also notes that sports clubs are devoting roughly 4% to 6% of their total player payroll to insurance, contributing to demand for coverage that matches the unique exposures of different types of operations. Agents and brokers are increasingly looking for specialized expertise, particularly when placing coverage for sports and leisure groups, campgrounds, motorsports venues, and large-scale special events.

The article says K&K Insurance has focused exclusively on sports, leisure, recreation, and entertainment, arguing that specialized knowledge matters because sports and leisure organizations do not fit a one-size-fits-all insurance model. It adds that beyond policies, clients increasingly value loss-control and risk-management support aimed at identifying potential exposures and safety-minded practices to help reduce losses before they occur.
