Trump says he will not seek an extension of Iran MOU
Trump reiterated Washington’s leverage over Iran, while Iran said an agreement has been elusive and the US must remove its blockade amid renewed US-Iran talks expectations.
US President Donald Trump said he is not interested in renewing an expiring agreement with Iran, Bloomberg reported Monday. Trump argued the US has leverage over Iran, pointing to a naval blockade of Iranian ports, and he again floated the idea of declaring the critical waterway as US territory and asserting that the US retains total control.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said an agreement has been elusive due to security complexities and what he described as obstruction by destructive elements, adding that the US must remove its blockade. Separately, Trump’s son in law and peace envoy Jared Kushner visited the Middle East to try to accelerate a US brokered ceasefire in Gaza, and Kushner said Trump expects patience on a possible Iran deal.
The article also discussed how currency markets can shift between risk on and risk off, noting that safe haven currencies such as the Japanese yen, Swiss franc, and US dollar tend to benefit in risk off periods, while commodity linked currencies such as the Australian dollar, Canadian dollar, and New Zealand dollar often strengthen in risk on periods. At the time of writing, West Texas Intermediate crude was up 0.1% on the day at $85.07.
