Xi tells Ecuador China backs Latin America’s autonomy from “interference”
The remarks came as Ecuador tries to balance relations with both China and the United States amid Washington’s assertiveness in the region.
Chinese President Xi Jinping told Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa that Latin American and Caribbean nations should be free to choose their international partners without outside interference, according to a Tuesday statement carried by Xinhua and reported by SCMP Economy.
Xi’s comments were framed as support for the region’s autonomy and pursuit of international cooperation based on each country’s interests, and they amounted to a veiled criticism of US interventions in Latin America following Donald Trump’s return to the White House in 2025.
The meeting also touched on a “zone of peace” declaration signed by 33 Latin American and Caribbean states in 2014, which rejected the use of force to settle disputes and banned nuclear weapons, alongside a rejection of foreign military intervention.
SCMP Economy reported that Noboa said Ecuador was willing to be “a good friend to China” while navigating growing pressure to balance relations between Beijing and Washington.
