France logs 7,300 excess deaths during summer heatwaves
Public health officials attributed the tally to multiple heatwaves, with 1,243 additional deaths recorded between July 2 and July 22.
France has recorded more than 7,300 excess deaths linked to summer heatwaves so far this year, according to health authorities cited by the Agence France-Presse, a figure driven by several waves of extreme temperatures.
Sante Public France reported 1,243 more deaths than usual between July 2 and July 22, adding to 5,764 excess deaths recorded from June 17 to June 30, along with 300 deaths identified in the year’s first high-temperature period in late May, bringing the total to 7,307.
The analysis also counted a record 52 days of heatwaves since mid-June, after a 14-day spell in June, 16 days in July, and a further 22-day period that began in late July and had not been officially declared over as of Tuesday.
