Japan considers sanctions after Putin visit to disputed Kuril islands
Japan is also discussing a temporary recall of its ambassador, while Russia warns it could take countermeasures.
Japan is weighing how forcefully to respond after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited a disputed island last week, with analysts divided on whether tougher steps would meaningfully affect Moscow.
According to SCMP Economy, Japanese media said senior foreign ministry officials met on Friday to consider options including additional sanctions and the temporary recall of Japan’s ambassador following Putin’s first-ever visit to one of four disputed islands, known as the Northern Territories by Japan and the Southern Kurils by Russia.
The outlet reported that during the discussion, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin said Russia reserved the right to take appropriate countermeasures against Japan due to Tokyo’s continued sanctions on Moscow and its support for Kyiv.
SCMP Economy also noted that some observers argued Japan should deepen cooperation with Ukraine and more clearly signal it would not be “bullied”, while others said Tokyo had limited economic leverage because bilateral ties are already weak and Japan relies on Russian natural gas.
