Mongolia apologizes after China raises security concerns at oil camp

China’s chargé d’affaires said the incident involved attempts to halt work at a Chinese-invested exploration area, and Mongolia detained two people involved.

Mongolia has apologized after China raised security concerns about protesters at the Kherlen Tohoi XXVIII oil exploration area tied to Mongolia Foison Energy, a Chinese-invested company. Coverage from SCMP Economy said protesters visited the site on August 14 and tried to stop exploration work, including a social media live stream and footage showing items belonging to Chinese workers dumped onto the ground.

SCMP Economy reported that China’s chargé d’affaires, Cao Li, raised the issue with B. Dashpurev, state secretary of Mongolia’s Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, during a meeting on Tuesday. The Chinese embassy urged Mongolia to protect the lawful rights and interests of Chinese enterprises and the personal and property safety of Chinese employees and to prevent similar incidents.

According to SCMP Economy, Dashpurev apologized and said Mongolia would not tolerate interference with the lawful operations of Chinese companies. He also said the acts were damaging to Mongolia’s national interests and economic security, with local police opening an investigation and detaining two citizens involved in the incident.
