Nethermind shifts cross-chain verification from LayerZero to Chainlink

The Block reports the move follows an extensive review, and it comes as more firms migrate LayerZero cross-chain operations to Chainlink since the April Kelp DAO rsETH bridge attack.

Nethermind, a major third party verifier in the LayerZero ecosystem, is moving its cross chain operations to Chainlink after an extensive review, according to The Block. The firm said it is joining Chainlink as a node operator to help secure Chainlink’s Cross Chain Interoperability Protocol, or CCIP, and its Data Feeds.

The Block reports that Nethermind migrated away from its Decentralized Verifier Network, or DVN, operations and joined the Chainlink Network as a node operator and strategic technology provider. As part of the change, Nethermind said it will contribute engineering tools, infrastructure services, and integration support for teams building blockchain applications.

The Block also notes that DVNs validate the authenticity and integrity of messages sent across blockchains within the LayerZero ecosystem. The announcement did not point to any specific technical problem with LayerZero and did not disclose financial or other terms related to the Chainlink shift.

The Block said the change adds to a growing pattern of firms moving cross chain operations from LayerZero to Chainlink in the months after an April attack on the Kelp DAO rsETH bridge. That incident resulted in the loss of 116,500 rsETH, worth about $292 million at the time, and it was not clear whether Nethermind started its review after the Kelp exploit.
