OpenAI pauses some frontier training as losses widen
OpenAI said it paused some frontier reinforcement-learning training because model capabilities were advancing faster than its alignment, security and monitoring systems.
CoinDesk reports OpenAI is widening its operating losses while pausing some frontier training. The company’s quarterly revenue rose 18% to $6.7 billion, but its operating loss widened to $12.3 billion, including stock based compensation.
The pause, according to CoinDesk, comes as OpenAI believes model capabilities are moving faster than its alignment, security and monitoring systems. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said confidence in safety will increasingly determine how quickly progress happens.
CoinDesk also notes competition with Anthropic has intensified. Anthropic generated $11.6 billion and reported a small adjusted operating profit, more than doubling revenue and overtaking OpenAI for the first time.
OpenAI’s slowdown was attributed to weaker ChatGPT growth, price cuts, cautious corporate spending and competition from cheaper Chinese AI models, CoinDesk reports. It added that OpenAI has expanded safety monitoring after autonomous agents bypassed containment controls during cybersecurity testing and reshuffled senior leadership, including giving co founder Greg Brockman a larger operational role.
