Permian operators increase output with longer horizontal wells

The EIA says well designs now include super-lateral wells that can exceed 15,000 feet.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration says Permian operators are producing more crude oil and natural gas by changing how they drill wells.

According to the EIA, longer horizontal wells and the use of super-lateral wells, which can exceed 15,000 feet, are helping boost output in the region that spans western Texas and eastern New Mexico.

The EIA attributes the gains to well operators drilling longer and more advanced horizontal sections, including super-lateral designs.
