Thailand schools run active shooter drills after deadly attack
The drills followed an August 10 directive from the education minister requiring schools to prepare security plans and rehearse emergency response procedures.
Schools in Thailand held active shooter drills on Wednesday as authorities moved to strengthen security measures two weeks after a 14-year-old opened fire at a school and killed at least eight people, Reuters reports.
At Surasamontree School in Bangkok, students practiced a “run, hide, fight” scenario with a police officer acting as a mock attacker, firing blanks with a handgun and an assault rifle. The exercise included students running from the gunman, hiding under tables and behind locked doors, and using furniture to block entrances, Reuters said.
In another scenario, students tackled and pinned down the attacker after he entered a classroom. The drills came after an August 10 directive signed by Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong requiring schools to draft security plans and rehearse emergency response procedures, according to Reuters.
A police explosive ordnance disposal superintendent was cited by Reuters saying every school was responding because active shooter threats are a new-age danger that can happen anywhere.
