US Navy USS Benfold lost power for four days in Pacific breakdown
The Navy said the generator casualty left the crew without drinking water, meals, functioning toilets, and air conditioning for days.
A US Navy destroyer, the USS Benfold, suffered an engineering casualty involving its generators that caused a loss of power while it was operating in the Pacific Ocean, the Navy confirmed. SCMP Economy, citing a Navy statement, said the incident was reported on July 24 by spokesman Commander Matthew Comer. The breakdown left about 300 sailors without power for four days.
Comer said the outage meant the crew went without drinking water, meals, functioning toilets, and air conditioning for days aboard the ship. The situation only came to public attention after it was first reported by USNI News, according to SCMP Economy.
The episode comes as lawmakers have raised broader concerns about living conditions aboard naval vessels and the military’s ability to supply ships during the conflict with Iran. SCMP Economy also noted Democratic lawmakers are calling for investigations related to conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, including reported shortages and crew stress.
