US sanctions ICC president Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye

The sanctions were imposed under a Trump executive order that authorizes measures against the Hague based court.

The United States imposed sanctions on Tuesday on International Criminal Court president Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, citing an executive order authorized last year.

Rubio said the individuals were targeted for directly engaging in efforts by the ICC to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute officials from governments that have not consented to ICC jurisdiction.

The ICC condemned the move, saying the sanctions undermine the rule of law.
