Mexico considers new anti-dumping duties and higher import taxes

The review is focused on products not covered by existing bilateral deals, with steel products and vehicles named as leading candidates for potential new duties.

Mexico is weighing plans to impose additional trade restrictions on selected imports from China and other countries, while raising existing import taxes on others, according to four people familiar with the matter cited by SCMP Economy.

The proposed measures would rely on anti-dumping investigations, which the economy ministry said it conducts case by case to determine whether imports are sold below their production costs, a process that could lead to new duties.

Mexico’s economy and finance ministries are evaluating which products currently not covered by bilateral trade arrangements might face new tariffs and which could see higher rates, the outlet reported.

The ministry said there is no concrete plan or proposal to implement new tariff adjustments at this time, but it is continuing consultations with businesses similar to those that helped design an earlier tariff package targeting Asian imports. It said steel products and vehicles are among the leading candidates.
