Volatility Shares files for NHL team ETFs tied to CME FutureSports indexes

The proposed ETFs would track futures linked to a CME index that starts each season at 7,500, moves with real time NHL results, and resets after the postseason.

Volatility Shares has filed to launch an exchange traded fund for every NHL franchise, with each fund designed to track one team’s on ice performance. The registration, filed Aug. 14, would cover all 32 teams, including an Anaheim Ducks ETF and a Winnipeg Jets ETF.

Each ETF would hold futures contracts based on a CME FutureSports Performance Index for its specific team. CME, which announced the indexes just three days earlier, says the indexes use an independent administrator called FutureSports and rely on official real time NHL data.

The indexes are calculated using 55 statistical measures plus wins, losses, and ties, and they are set to begin each season at 7,500. The value would update in real time as games are played and reset after the postseason ends.

While CME characterizes the underlying futures as a hedging tool for sponsors, broadcasters, arena operators, and vendors, the filing raises questions about demand from speculators. Yahoo Finance also notes that sports betting and prediction markets already allow consumers to wager on hockey, but these ETFs would embed sports performance linked exposure into a single investment product.
