AI is set to reshape insurance brokerage operations and producer roles

The piece argues AI will amplify producers ability to uncover clients hidden risk context while boosting efficiency in brokerage workflows.

Zywave’s Eric Rentsch outlines how AI is changing the insurance distribution conversation, with two focus areas gaining attention, AI’s impact on the human roles at the center of client relationships, and where AI can add the most value inside brokerage operations. The central point is that insurance is “infrequently purchased” and often misunderstood, so producers and account teams remain critical for guiding clients through high consequence decision making, even as tools evolve.

Rentsch argues AI should be viewed as a way to amplify experienced judgment rather than replace it. He says AI can help brokers read the difference between a client’s stated needs and their underlying risk, a process he describes as uncovering “hidden context,” which then supports pairing clients with appropriate carrier coverage using appointed or delegated authority.

The article also connects brokerage effectiveness to carrier outcomes, noting that carriers depend on channel partners for client acquisition and for screening and pre-underwriting of risk, again tied to that hidden context. It further argues that better internal brokerage operations for top performers, enabled by AI and digital channels, will help address efficiency demands without eliminating the need for trusted distribution.

Finally, Rentsch says carrier compensation design and channel optimization increasingly reflect that distribution is a critical driver of loss ratios, and that AI-enabled digital channels may increase the scarcity and value of trusted distribution. Overall, he frames the shift as a rewrite of how high performing brokers operate, not the removal of core advisory work.
