Bitcoin eases as leveraged shorts cluster near $72,000

Modeling cited by CoinDesk points to a large concentration of leveraged short positions around $72,000, making that level pivotal for bitcoin’s next move.

Bitcoin pulled back from its recent highs during Thursday morning trading, slipping about $1,000 from peak levels while still holding a gain of more than 9% over the prior 24 hours to around $71,450, according to CoinDesk.

CoinDesk also highlighted a possible positioning-driven catalyst, citing commentary from Charles Schwab director of crypto research Jim Ferraioli. His modeling found a large concentration of leveraged short positions clustered around the $72,000 area, raising the odds that the next breakout attempt could be amplified if price keeps rising.

Ferraioli said that if bitcoin approaches or breaks $72,000, traders still betting on lower prices could face mounting losses. CoinDesk noted that some may close short positions, while others could be forced out by exchanges, and the resulting buying demand could create a feedback loop.

The report added that when bitcoin traded near $65,000, Ferraioli estimated a 10% rise could put as much as $8 billion in leveraged shorts at risk, underscoring how market positioning can magnify moves as prices shift.
