Canada and US move toward finalizing a trade deal before the weekend
US and Canadian negotiators met again in Washington, and the Trump administration paused a threatened new wave of tariffs on Canadian goods until the weekend.
BBC Business reports that Canada and the US are finalizing a highly anticipated trade deal, with President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney framing the talks as progressing. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the Americans are very happy with the latest discussions after a 45 minute meeting with Canada’s counterpart.
Negotiators met for a third time in as many days, after Trump paused a new wave of tariffs he had threatened to impose overnight on a range of Canadian goods. Still, what the agreement covers, what concessions have been made, and what remains to be ironed out were not specified.
The reporting says Trump indicated Canada agreed to eliminate tariffs on US farmers, though he did not name which agricultural sectors would benefit. Trump also said the US would reduce tariffs it has placed on Canada by a little bit.
Carney said in a post on X that there was significant progress and that the countries are moving toward an agreement that reinforces Canada’s advantage, including securing the best terms for Canada’s strategic sectors and providing greater certainty about the future trading relationship. The article also notes Canada had been seeking US tariff relief for steel, aluminium, and automobiles, as well as other issues.
