China expands local sourcing for C919 aircraft components
Comac has delivered 42 C919s to domestic clients as China works to replace a wider set of Western-made materials over time.
China is stepping up efforts to localize parts for its C919 passenger jet, extending the replacement push beyond domestically produced engines to materials such as sealants, paints, bolts and other supplies, according to an aircraft engineer cited by SCMP Economy.
The localization drive is aimed at reducing exposure to supply chain and geopolitical headwinds as Beijing seeks more domestic sourcing for the C919 and future Chinese aircraft and engines.
SCMP Economy reports that the C919 entered commercial service in May 2023, and Comac delivered 42 aircraft to domestic clients by July.
While progress has been made, the engineer said cutting remaining dependence on Western suppliers is a complex, long term challenge, listing additional items still sourced from abroad that could be replaced.
