Hongkong Post faces scrutiny as some branches run at low productivity
A productivity index below 50% at certain post offices has raised questions about performance as residents warn that closures would add travel and payment inconvenience.
Hongkong Post is facing questions over branch performance, after a recent weekday at the Repulse Bay post office showed very low customer traffic, with five customers served in an hour by two staff members.
Residents who use the service said closures would create inconvenience and push them to travel to other locations. A Repulse Bay freelancer cited parcel sending to Europe and collecting online shopping packages, saying private couriers are more expensive and that the branch avoids queues.
The outlet also highlighted that the Repulse Bay area provides more than parcel services, including bill payments for electricity, water, and tax, which residents said distinguishes it from private courier options. The discussion included the view that government services do not need to be judged solely on profit and loss, given their public purpose.
According to the report, the Repulse Bay branch was among five post offices with a productivity index below 50%, a metric that measures mail volume and manpower utilisation at individual sites.
