Hesai sees higher lidar sensor orders as smart car adoption grows

Hesai Group says the share of new cars with lidars rose to 27.0% in the first quarter of 2026 from 12.0% in 2025 for models priced between 150,000 yuan and 200,000 yuan.

Hesai Group chief financial officer Andrew Fan told the South China Morning Post that Chinese carmakers are doubling down on smart-vehicle production, which is helping sustain demand for hi-tech components such as lidar sensors even as the broader auto market remains lacklustre.

Fan said orders for Hesai’s lidar sensors were higher this year than in the same period last year, adding that an increasing percentage of new car models are being fitted with lidars as automakers push for greater intelligence.

The company also expects lidar-equipped vehicles to expand further, with Fan saying it is expected that millions of new cars will be equipped with lidars and that the growth driver is large enough for Hesai to pursue additional expansion.

Data cited by SCMP from the China Passenger Car Association showed lidar penetration in mainland China for new cars priced between 150,000 yuan and 200,000 yuan increased to 27.0% in the first quarter of 2026 from 12.0% in 2025.
