Citigroup plans to offer Bitcoin custody to institutional clients by year-end

The bank says its custody expansion will leverage its Custody+ framework and that its processing upgrades have cut custody transaction times by as much as 92%.

Citigroup said it plans to launch Bitcoin custody for institutional clients by the end of the year, bringing secure storage of digital assets into the bank’s existing custody infrastructure for traditional holdings.

The custody offering is designed to manage the private cryptographic keys needed to access and transfer Bitcoin, and it will be delivered through Citigroup’s “Custody+” suite, which it described as a faster framework spanning custody, settlement, foreign exchange, and cash management.

Citigroup said its custody operation already serves clients across more than 100 markets, including 62 markets where it runs its own custody network. It expects that adding Bitcoin custody will allow institutions to keep BTC with the same bank that holds their stocks and bonds.

The bank also pointed to internal system upgrades, saying more than 80% of its transactions are now processed in real time, with the new system cutting processing times by as much as 92. Citigroup shares were up 46% over the last 12 months, trading at $137.62 per share.
