Homebuying break-even can take 15 years in some markets

Zillow Research says the national average timeline for a home purchase to beat renting is about 15 years, with longer horizons in certain areas.

Zillow Research says that in some local markets, the time it takes buyers to save enough to break even on a home purchase can extend into retirement years.

According to the research, nationally a typical household can save for and come out ahead on buying versus renting after about 15 years.

The report frames the result as a function of how long it takes to reach a favorable cost comparison, which varies by market.

Zillow Research concludes that in certain places, the payoff from homeownership may not arrive until many years after a purchase.
