Malaysia signals stronger Taiwan stance alignment with Beijing
Observers say Anwar Ibrahim’s unusually categorical remarks could make it harder for Kuala Lumpur to attract Taiwanese semiconductor investment, even without changing its one-China policy.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s emphatic backing of Beijing’s position on Taiwan has drawn praise and diplomatic goodwill from mainland China, while analysts warned it could increase friction for Malaysia as it seeks Taiwanese hi-tech investment, according to SCMP Economy.
Analysts said the comments did not alter Malaysia’s long-standing one-China policy, but his unusually categorical tone could reinforce perceptions of closer alignment with Beijing.
The bigger potential trade-off, observers added, is commercial, as Malaysia competes for future Taiwanese semiconductor investment.
When asked about Taiwan, Anwar said, “It is one China,” and compared the issue to Malaysia, saying he would use force to preserve national unity if a Malaysian state sought to break away, SCMP Economy reported.
