USS Nimitz retirement delayed to align with Ford-class carrier delivery
CCTV cited concerns that extended carrier deployments reflect fatigue across the US fleet as US shipbuilding capacity declines.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, citing official military analysts, said the “glory days” of the US Navy’s longest-serving aircraft carrier, the USS Nimitz, are over and linked the concern to fatigue across the broader US fleet.
In an interview aired by CCTV, Li Yaqiang, a former senior colonel in the Chinese navy and military commentator, pointed to a series of accidents as evidence that the Nimitz is being kept operational with difficulty.
CCTV also said the US Navy’s reliance on extended carrier deployments was a cause for concern, particularly for the Nimitz, as the shipbuilding capacity picture in the United States continues to weaken.
According to the report, the Nimitz was originally scheduled to be retired in 2026, but the US Navy postponed decommissioning until March next year to align with the expected delivery of the second Ford-class carrier, the USS John F. Kennedy.
