Silver opens higher as Treasury plans boost long-term bond buybacks
September silver futures opened at $67.08 per ounce, up 1.9%, after long-term Treasury yields fell following a plan to double long-term bond repurchases over the next few months.
Silver prices rose at the open on Thursday, August 20, 2026, with September futures starting at $67.08 per ounce, up 1.9% from Wednesday’s close, according to Yahoo Finance.
Despite an early drop to $66.81 as of 9:04 a.m. ET, silver briefly moved back above $67 for the first time since June before moderating.
The price action followed a U.S. Treasury announcement that it would double buybacks of long-term bonds over the next few months, with repurchases targeted at $4 billion or more per operation, Yahoo Finance said.
Analysts cited by Yahoo Finance noted the overall scale of the program is small relative to the broader $32 trillion market and expect the impact on long-term borrowing costs to be short term, though the quick decline in yields supported silver prices.
