Solana moves to 350ms mainnet target while cutting per-block limits

Solana plans to keep an effective 400ms target through epoch 1019, then switch to 350ms in epoch 1020, while a draft also reduces several per-slot budgets to preserve the same overall compute ceiling per second.

Solana is moving its Mainnet performance target to 350 milliseconds per slot, with the change scheduled to take effect in epoch 1020. The network will stay on its existing 400-millisecond effective target through epoch 1019 due to a one-epoch activation delay, after a feature first activated at the start of epoch 1019.

Solana said the rollout shortens the block production interval without raising the theoretical compute allowance per second. Under the draft approach, the proposal keeps an example maximum block compute ceiling roughly unchanged as slot targets move faster, using a 100 million compute unit maximum block limit and showing that halving slot time would leave the per-second ceiling at about the same level.

The draft also reduces multiple per-slot budgets, including account-write, vote, data-allocation, data-shred, coding-shred, and partitioned-reward allocations. Solana frames the goal as creating more frequent scheduling opportunities, without quietly increasing the amount of work validators might be asked to process each second.

Separately, the figures being discussed are described as target timings rather than guarantees of observed block production, confirmation latency, or economic finality. CryptoSlate reports that test clusters are already at faster effective targets, with Testnet at 200ms and Devnet at 300ms, while the SIMD-0525 item remains a draft.
