Wang Yi urges the US to drop its “hostile policy” toward Pyongyang

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the US to change its “hostile policy” toward North Korea, according to a readout from China’s foreign ministry following talks with South Korea’s Cho Hyun in Seoul on Wednesday.

Wang said Beijing welcomed moves by South and North Korea toward peaceful coexistence, and he reiterated China’s commitment to playing a constructive role in peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.

He did not answer questions from reporters about whether China could help broker a summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, saying the issue was for North Korea and the United States to decide.

Wang also urged South Korea to maintain autonomy in its foreign policy, adding that Seoul should develop its external relations independently and in a balanced way that avoids conflict with its fundamental interests, according to the readout.
