Bitcoin climbs above 200-day moving average for first time in nine months

The move came as Bitcoin rose to nearly $73,000 and the U.S. Treasury said it would at least double long-dated bond buybacks, lifting liquidity and risk appetite.

Bitcoin has climbed above its 200-day moving average for the first time in about nine months, a technical shift that suggests the longer-term downtrend may be losing momentum, Cointelegraph reports.

Charting platform Barchart noted that BTC crossed above the 200-day moving average for the first time since November 2025, roughly a month after the coin reached an all-time high above $126,000. Cointelegraph says the price increase was also accompanied by a sharp weekly-style move, with BTC climbing to nearly $73,000 on Thursday, according to TradingView data.

Cointelegraph links the rally to a U.S. Treasury liquidity action, saying the price jump followed the Treasury Department’s announcement that it would at least double the size of liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated Treasury securities. The maximum buyback size is set to rise from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation starting Sept. 9, with the operation intended to improve liquidity at the long end of the Treasury market.

Standard Chartered’s Geoff Kendrick said the buyback plan could help fuel a broader Bitcoin rally toward $100,000 by year-end, Cointelegraph adds. The outlet also notes that the announcement initially pushed long-term yields lower, which helped bolster risk appetite across financial markets.
