Peru vows to activate free trade deal with Hong Kong this year
The new government said the Hong Kong pact is the only explicit Hong Kong reference in its priorities document, amid uncertainty over the Chinese-built Chancay megaport.
Peru’s new government has pledged to move forward with a free-trade agreement with Hong Kong, aiming to bring it into force during 2026 as part of a broader strategy to position the country as a commercial bridge between South America and the Asia-Pacific, according to SCMP Economy.
Prime Minister Luis Galarreta said the administration will promote the agreement’s entry into force in 2026, while also advancing new agreements and promoting regional exports, framing commercial openness as a state policy under President Keiko Fujimori’s administration.
The commitment was the only explicit reference to Hong Kong in Galarreta’s 18-page priorities address to lawmakers, which also focused heavily on domestic security, economic growth, infrastructure, mining investment, and government reform, the outlet reported.
SCMP Economy noted the address was otherwise silent on mainland China and did not directly mention the Chinese-operated Chancay megaport, where uncertainty remains around how the project will fit into Peru’s trade posture.
