Bitcoin tops $79,000 after short squeeze and liquidation cascade
CoinDesk reports the rally followed breaks above key resistance and the 200-day moving average, with analysts divided on whether spot ETF inflows and easier macro conditions are needed to sustain gains.
Bitcoin surged toward $70,000 and briefly rose to $79,200 before pulling back to about $77,500, as analysts pointed to a short squeeze and cascading liquidations after the market broke above key resistance levels and its 200-day moving average, according to CoinDesk.
CoinDesk reports that some market watchers interpret the sharp, spike driven move as the kind of technical “bottom” pattern that often includes a giant green candle and forced short covering, while also noting that FOMO can amplify volatility.
However, analysts are split on whether the move signals the end of the bear market. Mati Greenspan said momentum and the structure of the rally make another large drawdown less likely, while Jason Fernandes warned that without sustained spot ETF inflows and clearer macroeconomic rate easing, bitcoin could stall near overhead resistance around the $75,000 to $76,000 area.
CoinDesk also cited supportive policy signals from Washington, including discussion of Bitcoin Treasury operations and progress toward market-structure and regulatory clarity, alongside U.S. Treasury actions aimed at bond buybacks that can boost broader risk sentiment.
