CUHK team performs Hong Kong’s first robot-assisted pelvic fracture surgery
CUHK says the robotic system could be especially beneficial for older patients with multiple conditions, where standard pelvic surgery can be higher risk.
A team of researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong conducted the city’s first robot-assisted pelvic fracture surgery, positioning the technology as a potentially safer, less invasive option for a procedure that is typically considered among the most challenging in orthopaedic trauma.
SCMP Economy reports that CUHK faculty of medicine said the orthopaedic robotic surgical system enables surgeons to carry out pelvic fracture reduction in a “safe, precise, and minimally invasive” way.
The university’s orthopaedics and traumatology team said pelvic fractures have become more common in Hong Kong as the population ages, and that the approach may be particularly meaningful for geriatric patients who often have multiple medical conditions that can make traditional surgery more high risk.
CUHK’s Dr Ronald Wong Man-yeung said pelvic fracture surgery is difficult due to the density of blood vessels and vital organs around the pelvis, noting the injury can be life threatening, especially for elderly patients.
