Mistral AI plans sovereign European AI service using GLM-5.2 model
The service will start offering other companies’ models while keeping the underlying platform under European control, with GLM-5.2 sourced from China’s Zhipu.

SCMP Economy reports that French AI firm Mistral AI said it will begin offering other companies’ models, while keeping its “European infrastructure for sovereign AI” service under European control.
The company’s model of choice is GLM-5.2, an open-weight large language model developed by Zhipu, also known as Z.ai. The report notes that Zhipu has been included on the US entity list since 2025 due to national security concerns tied to military modernization.
SCMP Economy frames the move as part of a broader European Union dilemma: despite political calls for a sovereign European AI offering, the bloc has lagged the United States and China in investment and innovation. It also cites a geoeconomics expert saying an emphasis on AI adoption, rather than innovation, is the right strategy for Mistral and Europe.
