EPA allows earlier winter-blend gasoline with 10% ethanol from Sept. 1

The waiver arrives as U.S. gasoline prices have stayed above $4 per gallon since mid-July, with the administration arguing it could add hundreds of thousands of barrels per day to supply.

Washington has moved to ease near-term gasoline costs while increasing pressure on Iran, with the EPA authorizing an early seasonal switch to winter-grade gasoline. The rule allows sales of gasoline blended with 10% ethanol starting September 1, rather than waiting for the normal mid-September transition, OilPrice reported.

The administration said ending summer-blend requirements early could increase domestic gasoline supply by hundreds of thousands of barrels per day, aiming to provide relief at the pump. It also noted that average U.S. gasoline prices have remained above $4 per gallon since mid-July, according to AAA.

OilPrice said the timing underscores a balancing act for the administration as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent promised “toughest sanctions in history” against Iran alongside the existing U.S. blockade. Bessent also urged other countries, including China, to cooperate, and said oil markets may have misread the pressure campaign after prices jumped following related announcements.
