Europe’s energy stockpile response held after Hormuz disruption

The IEA approved a record 400 million barrels emergency oil release, with European member contributions around 107.5 million barrels.

Europe has shown during the recent energy crisis that its emergency energy system can work, after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted major oil and gas flows, according to OilPrice.

The disruption pushed prices higher, forced changes in shipping routes, and increased insurance costs, while concerns surfaced over the availability of refined products, especially aviation fuel. Even so, Europe did not run out of oil, diesel, or jet fuel.

OilPrice said the outcome reflected decades of mandatory stockholding and coordinated emergency planning, alongside alternative supply and refinery adjustments. Higher prices also played a role by suppressing some demand.

Looking ahead, however, Europe faces a harder test, OilPrice cautioned that strategic reserves can absorb the first shock but cannot permanently secure an import-dependent energy system, and it noted that after using part of its oil buffer, Europe is now heading into winter with a less comfortable gas position.
