India’s copper demand rises, supported by EVs and grid upgrades
Copper demand totaled about 1.88 million tonnes in FY25, up 9.3% year over year, as EV adoption, renewables and power-grid modernization drive usage.
India’s copper outlook is strong over the next decade, supported by rapid electrification, renewable power expansion, electric vehicle adoption, power-grid modernization and rising infrastructure spending, LiveMint Markets writes.
According to the article, copper demand was about 1.88 million tonnes in FY25, up 9.3% from the prior year, while domestic supply remains constrained. That shortage is creating opportunities for companies expanding mining, refining and downstream capacity, particularly as solar and transmission build-outs increase copper consumption.
The piece highlights Hindustan Copper as India’s only vertically integrated copper producer and its leading copper mining company. It cites major operations at Malanjkhand and Khetri and says the company is pursuing expansion projects aimed at increasing mine production capacity to 12.2 million tonnes per annum by FY31, with a Malanjkhand expansion expected to take ore production from 2.5 MTPA to 5 MTPA.
LiveMint Markets also points to planned mine expansion at the Khetri Copper Complex in Rajasthan, targeting ore production growth from 1 MTPA to 2.9 MTPA, and notes Hindustan Copper reported strong Q1FY27 results on the back of strong copper prices, including net sales of ₹936.5 crore.
