Apollo confirms hackers stole personal data in July social engineering breach

The firm said the stolen records included Social Security numbers and home addresses, and it has offered affected people credit monitoring and identity protection.

Apollo Global Management has confirmed that hackers stole personal data during a breach last month, marking the first disclosed case in a broader summer wave of social engineering attacks hitting private equity and financial firms. In a notice filed with the California attorney general’s data breach registry, Apollo said intruders had unauthorized access to some cloud based systems between July 6 and July 10. The company later determined, on August 12, which data categories were taken, including full names, dates of birth, contact details, home addresses, and Social Security numbers.

Apollo did not disclose how many people were affected or whether the information belonged to employees, portfolio company personnel, or other groups. The firm said it notified law enforcement and brought in outside cybersecurity and forensic experts after the intrusion was identified.

Apollo said it has no evidence so far that the stolen data has been posted online or used for fraud, and it is offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services. The incident fits into an extortion campaign that researchers previously flagged, which has been described as using phone based impersonation, or vishing, to trick staff into handing over passwords and one time login codes.
