Sandbox halts Base and BNB chain SAND bridging after exploit

The breach involved minting unbacked SAND, with The Sandbox saying the exploit affected less than 0.01% of the 3.0 billion token supply.

The Sandbox has stopped bridging SAND between Ethereum and Polygon-adjacent networks on Base and BNB Smart Chain after discovering an exploit that allowed an attacker to mint unbacked tokens, according to CoinDesk. The company said it disabled bridging on the affected networks to isolate tokens created during the incident and prevent them from being moved or redeemed.

CoinDesk reported that Blockaid flagged the exploit while it was underway, pointing to an “approveAndCall” mechanism tied to hijacked LayerZero delegate permissions. The report said the attacker bridged as much as $49 billion in nominal unbacked tokens, though The Sandbox cautioned the figure does not represent confirmed theft or money available to sell.

The Sandbox warned users not to buy, sell or trade SAND on Base and BNB because liquidity had been compromised. It also said SAND on Ethereum and Polygon was unaffected, with no user wallets compromised and SAND locked on Ethereum for back-bridging remaining intact.

In South Korea, CoinDesk said major exchanges Bithumb and Upbit suspended SAND deposits and withdrawals following the security incident, citing suspected security issues. The report added that separate analyses put the amount of minted SAND across attacker addresses at different stages, emphasizing the figures reflected nominal token creation rather than confirmed losses.
