Hong Kong customs seizes endangered turtles and parrots, arrests woman
Customs said 17 live turtles were found hidden in socks in a package declared as a jacket, and it estimated the turtles' market value at about HK$102,000.
Hong Kong customs officers seized endangered turtles and parrots in two separate smuggling cases and arrested one woman, according to the SCMP Economy.
In one case, officers found 17 live turtles in a package declared as containing a jacket that arrived at Hong Kong International Airport from the United States. Customs said the turtles were concealed in socks and it estimated their market value at about HK$102,000, or US$13,010.
In a separate case, customs stopped a 21-year-old mainland Chinese woman at the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line control point and searched her bag and clothing. Authorities found a rabbit, hamster, guinea pig, sugar glider, and two parrots that were suspected to be endangered species.
