Lula urges Trump to resolve tariff dispute in phone call

The Brazilian president said US tariffs imposed in July are harming both Brazil and the United States, and urged keeping negotiations open ahead of Brazil’s October election.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva urged US President Donald Trump in a phone call to resolve their countries’ trade dispute, arguing that Washington’s tariffs were imposed on baseless grounds, according to a statement from Lula’s office, as reported by SCMP Economy.

In the call, Lula said the tariffs negatively affect both Brazil and the United States and emphasized that remaining at the negotiating table is the best option for both countries.

Washington imposed two new sets of tariffs on Brazil in July, and the issue has become a key campaign point ahead of Brazil’s presidential election in October, when Lula is seeking a fourth and final term.

The statement comes as diplomatic relations between Trump and Lula have fluctuated, and tensions have risen as the election approaches. Trump has also backed several right-wing candidates in recent Latin American elections, and the outlet notes he is an ally of Jair Bolsonaro, whose son Flavio is Lula’s main rival.
