Israel carries out strikes near Turkish border amid growing tensions
The strikes targeted the Abu Al-Duhur airbase in northwest Idlib, and Washington expressed “deep concern” over Israel’s “unnecessary escalation” after the action.
Fears of a broader military confrontation between Israel and Turkey have escalated after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered air strikes on a Syrian airbase near the Turkish border, amid heightened scrutiny of Turkish involvement in Syria, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet said Israel conducted eight strikes on the Abu Al-Duhur airbase in northwest Idlib province on Tuesday. Netanyahu’s office described the action as a warning to Turkey against expanding its military presence in Syria or supporting efforts to rebuild Syrian armed forces.
SCMP Economy reported that Netanyahu’s office claimed Israel and Syria had agreed to a “status quo in security matters,” which Damascus was “on the verge of breaching” by allowing Turkish troops to deploy at the airbase near Aleppo.
Netanyahu later reframed the strikes as a “message” that Israel would not tolerate Turkish military entrenchment in Syria moving “southward,” SCMP Economy added, noting the comments followed a rare expression of “deep concern” from Washington over Israel’s “unnecessary escalation.”
