U.S. battery storage capacity rose sharply in past three years
The U.S. power system had 43.6 gigawatts of operational battery storage capacity by the end of 2025, and 8.3 gigawatts more was added in the first half of 2026.
The U.S. battery storage buildout accelerated over the last three years, with utility scale battery storage capacity averaging 70% growth per year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
By the end of 2025, the power system had 43.6 gigawatts of operational battery storage capacity.
In the first six months of 2026, operators added another 8.3 gigawatts of capacity, bringing total nameplate battery storage close to 52 gigawatts.
