U.S. battery storage capacity grew 70% annually over three years

The U.S. power system reached 43.6 gigawatts of operational battery storage by end-2025, with an additional 8.3 gigawatts added in the first half of 2026, bringing capacity close to 52 gigawatts.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration says utility-scale battery storage capacity in the United States expanded rapidly over the past three years, averaging 70% annual growth.

By the end of 2025, the power system had 43.6 gigawatts of operational battery storage capacity.

In the first six months of 2026, operators added another 8.3 gigawatts of battery storage, bringing nameplate capacity to nearly 52 gigawatts.
