EU border checks via EES spark delays for UK travelers
The EU said it will not pause the EES during peak summer travel, even after reports of delays of up to three hours.
The Guardian reports that Britain’s summer holiday plans are being disrupted by long queues and waiting times tied to the EU’s new digital entry and exit system, known as EES.
According to the report, the system requires non-EU travelers to register, be photographed, and provide fingerprints when entering and leaving the Schengen zone, and it has been in full technical force since April after launching last autumn.
Brussels rejected calls from airports and airlines to suspend EES during peak summer periods, despite passenger accounts that include delays of up to three hours and missed connections.
The article also notes that border police can relax requirements if queues become unmanageable under an opt-out that expires next month, and it describes a case where a traveler said his EES record failed to capture an exit and was later corrected by border authorities.
