US takes an “America First” stance for APEC talks in China

The US said it will focus talks on opening opportunities for American firms in areas including agriculture, energy, transport, and health, as well as pushing services exports and supply chain innovation.

The United States has pledged to pursue an “America First” approach for the latest Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, talks taking place in China ahead of President Xi Jinping’s scheduled visit to the United States, according to the US State Department.

In a statement, the State Department said US leadership at APEC is intended to promote prosperity and advance economic growth by breaking down barriers for US business, boosting fair and reciprocal trade, and supporting American job growth.

The US said delegates led by Casey Mace, the senior official for APEC affairs, will seek to expand opportunities for American businesses in sectors including agriculture and fisheries, energy, transport, health and food security.

The statement also said the US plans to push for higher services exports and supply chain innovation, while leading discussions on trade and labor related matters, Reuters? No. Earlier in the year, Xi hosted Donald Trump in Beijing, where plans were outlined for US China boards of trade and investment that have not yet started, and the APEC senior officials meeting is the third of its kind this year, according to China’s foreign ministry.
