Canada to match US tariffs dollar-for-dollar starting 8 September
The new US 50% tariffs cover about $20 billion of Canadian imports, roughly 5% of total trade, according to reporting.
US President Donald Trump said Canada wants “the benefits of being a State, without being one” after trade talks between the two countries collapsed, prompting new 50% US tariffs on a range of Canadian goods.
BBC Business reports Trump also claimed American farmers have paid “massive amounts of Tariffs” for years. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney called the move a “miscalculation” aimed to “hurt and divide us,” and said Canada will respond by matching the US measures “dollar-for-dollar” beginning 8 September.
Carney confirmed the countermeasures will include levies on steel, dairy, appliances, and electronics, and he described the situation as a trade “war.” Both sides accuse each other of making last minute changes that derailed negotiations, with Carney saying Canada cannot accept what the US offered while it will not provide what the US asked for.
The new 50% tariffs will apply in addition to existing US tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium, automobiles, and lumber. The scope is limited, covering about $20 billion of Canadian imports, or about 5% in total, including items such as wine, dairy, cement, clothing, and hockey equipment, and Carney said details of Canada’s retaliation will be released in the coming days.
