Iran escalates against Saudi Arabia via Houthi drone attacks

The attacks targeted Najran airport and an Aramco facility, raising concerns about renewed risk to Middle East oil supply routes.

LiveMint Markets reports that Iran has begun targeting US-aligned partners in the Middle East, with Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis carrying out two drone attacks on Saudi Arabia.

According to the Houthis' military spokesperson Yahya Saree, the drones hit a sensitive target at Najran airport and an Aramco facility in Najran, in a move described as a fresh escalation after prior strikes on Saudi infrastructure.

The outlet adds that the renewed tension comes as the US and Iran remain at odds over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and it notes that the UAE Ministry of Defence has accused Iran of using ballistic missiles and threatening maritime lanes.

The article also ties the escalation to the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement signed on 7 August 2026 by Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, which states that an armed attack on any one of the three countries is treated as an attack on all of them.
