Iran president warns of major social problems as US sanctions expand
Pezeshkian spoke as US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was set to announce additional punitive measures described as the toughest sanctions in history, and Iran’s security chief warned against actions that could target US commercial interests.
Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, said Iranian society is dealing with “many problems,” adding that the government is trying to prevent them as the United States steps up efforts to isolate Iran’s economy through new sanctions.
In remarks broadcast on state television, Pezeshkian characterized US pressure as a “full-scale economic, military and security war,” and his acknowledgement came a day before US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was expected to announce further punitive economic measures.
The protests of recent years have often been triggered by economic hardships, including inflation and exchange-rate swings that have eroded purchasing power, and authorities previously reported more than 3,000 deaths during unrest while foreign NGOs disputed the account by citing an indiscriminate crackdown.
The article also said Iran’s top security body leader, Mohsen Rezaei, warned neighboring countries against joining US efforts to squeeze Iran’s economy, threatening that the approach could put US commercial interests in the region at risk.
