Trump hits back at Canada as US tariffs take effect
The US imposed 50% tariffs on $20bn of Canadian goods, with Canada vowing to retaliate dollar for dollar as the dispute escalates into a trade war.
The US and Canada have slid further into a trade war after negotiations broke down, with Donald Trump and Canadian prime minister Mark Carney trading blame for the collapse, and tariffs beginning to take effect. The US president said Canada had sought benefits from its trade position while also claiming the country had faced tariffs for years.
The Trump administration’s tariffs, which started Saturday, cover a range of products, and were described as reaching 50% on $20bn worth of Canadian goods. Trump said “No more!!!” in response to the situation and argued that Canada has charged US farmers with large tariff amounts.
Carney, speaking to reporters, characterized the moment as effectively being “at war” over trade, saying the US escalated its tariff attack and that Canada would not accept what was offered or provide what was requested. He said Canada would match the US response “dollar for dollar.”
On the US side, the trade representative Jamieson Greer said the US was compelled to act following what he described as Canada’s retaliatory measures, adding that the goal was protecting American workers and supply chains. Trade experts cited in the report warned the tariffs could lead to some job losses, while also emphasizing the political impact of renewed tension between the neighbors.
